Seminar on computer data storage, security, management
By Jarhold Bacara, IT Specialist
Last July 4, I represented CADSOURCING at the seminar on Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Citrix XenDesktop / XenApp. It focused on HPE Nimble Storage Solution for Citrix Xen Desktop at Tsay Cheng restaurant in Cebu Grand Convention center.
According to online definitions, HPE Nimble Storage is “a predictive flash storage technology. It features hardware and software products for data storage, specifically data storage arrays that use the iSCSI and Fibre Channel protocols and includes data backup and data protection features.”
“Citrix Workspace is a digital workspace software platform,” said another definition, “that allows multiple users to remotely access and operate Microsoft Windows desktops running in a datacenter or a public or private cloud, via devices located elsewhere.”
Here are more details about what I learned during the seminar:
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE)
HPE, defined as an AI Platform, collects and analyzes millions of sensor data points every second to anticipate problems and resolve issues without human intervention. The speakers talked about the concepts of a data center, and proceeded to share how HPE helps us make a data center smarter, more reliable and much more autonomous. As expected, they also promote their products together with their capabilities and features. This includes their latest generation of server machines (tower type), server storage (rack mount) and the nimble storage, which is a cloud base storage.
The speakers also gave us some information about server virtualization and server drive configuration, delving more into computer storage standard RAID (redundant array of independent disks) configurations: RAID 0 (striping), RAID 5 (distributed parity) and RAID 10 (or RAID 1+0—mirroring and striping). We learned more on the configuration of different hard drive RPM in servers as well; SAN (Storage Area Network) and NAS (Network Attached Storage).
Nimble storage, however, can hold data capacity from 128TB (terabyte) to 5PB (petabyte). Obviously, this is applicable in a large IT structure. Though Nimble storage isn’t applicable to our network, we still need to study these hardware configurations related to Server, since our data is expanding, as speakers also discussed the compatibility with the Server operating system.
Citrix Xen Desktop and XenApp
Citrix is more like a virtual workspace and has a one location data center as an active directory. Citrix will allow you to access to any network and in different devices such as desktops, laptops, tablets and even on an iOS smartphone. Citrix will help us work anytime and anywhere. This is made possible through XenApp, allowing “IT departments to centrally manage Windows applications and computing resources in a secure data center. Users can access the Citrix XenApp applications from anywhere and from non-Windows clients,” according to online definitions.
